The
first two prototype of SS9 was produced in 1998 by Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive
Works. This locomotive is aimed at hauling passenger coaches at 160 km/h.
The nominal power is higher than SS8, so that it is suitable for hauling
standard passenger trains (with 18 coaches) and climbing up long slopes
at quasi-high speed. Its construction was simplified, standardised and
experience from SS8 and SS6B was fully ultilized. The first two sample
locomotive was finished at 26th December, 1998.
In July, 2003, around ten
SS9 locomotives were distributed in Guangzhou Depot for hauling express
trains in Jingguang Line.
