DF
4 / 4A are the most common type and well-known diesel locomotives
in China because of its green colour. They were was developed in
1974 by Dalian Locomotive Work and was distributed all over the
country. However, their production is stopped now and will be replaced
by newer generation of locomotives. |

DF4B(Passenger) |
120 km/h |
DF4B
was developed in 1984. Their engine was modified from DF4 and were
divided into "Passenger" (orange) and "Freight"
types (green). They were distributed all over the country.
It is
difficult to classify the green DF4 into DF4, DF4A and DF4B. We
can only judge them from their numbers. |

DF4C
(Passenger) |
120 km/h |
DF4C was
developed in 1985. Their power is slightly larger than DF4B and
imported parts are used. They are distributed in Central, Northern
and North-east China.

DF4C
(A1A bogie) |
140 km/h |
Ziyang Locomotive Work
developed only two DF4C with A1A bogie 2001, namely 5274 and 5275.
Their body look like DF11, and their A1A bogie has motors only at
the first and third axle, but not the middle one. They belong to Sanshui
Depot, Guangdong. It is believed that their engines are the same as
DF4C, but their gear ratio was different. |

DF4D(Passenger) |
145 km/h
|
DF4D was
developed at 1996 for increasing speed at the mainlines in China.
Their nominal power are 2940 kW and was the largest in the DF4 series.
The number is 0xxx.
They were only slightly
faster than DF4B (145 km/h) initially. Then they were modified and
many DF4D derivatives were made. When they were first made, the
roof have corners over the driving cabinet. After their routine
check, the roof become round shaped. Now the DF4D is distributed
all over the country and is the main locomotives at Jinghu (Beijing-Shanghai),
Huning (Shanghai-Hangzhou), Jingjiu (Beijing-Shenzhen) and other
non-electrified mainlines. |
 |
DF4D(Freight) |
100 km/h |
These typeo of locomotives
are distributed at Beijing and north-east China. Their gear ratio
are different from DF4D (passenger). Their numbers are 4xxx. |
 |
DF4DF |
120 km/h |
These DF4D can supply
electricity for the hotel load of passenger wagons. They are not in
mass production and is used in hauling trains between Chongqing and
Dazhou. |
 |
DF4DK |
170 km/h |
These are the quasi-high
speed DF4Ds made by Dalian with numbers 3xxx. They were mass produced
at Jun 2000. They can be easily recognised from a cream yellow line
across the red body shell. They are the main locomotives at Jinghu
(Beijing-Shanghai), Huning (Shanghai-Hangzhou), Jingjiu (Beijing-Shenzhen)
and other non-electrified mainlines. |
 |
DF4DAC
/ DF4DJ |
145 km/h |
These are the DF4D with
AC-AC transmission. They are now at testing stage and used in freight
service. Only two were made up to now. 0001-0002 belongs to Fengtai
Depot, Beijing Bureau. |
 |
DF4D-7xxx |
100 km/h |
These DF4Ds are fitted with steering bogies
and are used in Jiaoliu Line for freight service. |
| |
DF4DD |
? km/h |
These are DF4D for shunting.
Only few are made and used at shunting trains at Yuehai Pier. (Train
ferry services from Guangdong to Hainan Island.) |

 |
Each DF4E
contain two units of locomotives. They are the same as double-headed
DF4B because each unit uses the same engine as DF4B (16V240ZJB engine).
They are used in mainline freight services. Only 17 DF4E are produced
and they are working in the Shanghai area. (Nanxiang Depot, Shanghai) |
