News on Hong Kong Railways: 2001/3/23 - The first 8 cars of new KCR East Rail Rolling stocks have arrived Hunghom pier today. KCR ordered 250 cars from Itochu-Kinki-Kawasaki Consortium and 96 of them will work on East Rail with the remaining at West Rail. 2001/3/20 - "KCR East Rail Passenger Fun Day": KCRC Ho Tung Lau Maintenance Centre (Fo Tan Station) will be opened for public on April 1, 2001 (Sunday). Activities include East Rail Control Room and workshop tours, demostration on train wash, game stalls, clown performance, magic shows etc. Admission ticket is required for entry. 2001/2/22 - various sources suggested the new KCR East Rail stocks (from Kawasaki, Japan) will be arriving Hong Kong around late March/early April. 2001/1/19 - In the current issue of Hong Kong Government Gazette, an announcement is made on replacing the 50 year old Lo Wu Rail Bridge linking Hong Kong and Mainland China. 2001/1/14 - An exhibition on "Lifelife Express" will be taken place at Shatin KCR Station Freight Yard between 10 and 12 February. 2000/5/13 - HO scale (1:87) SS8 0038 model locomotive is now available on the market. This model is painted with text of Jing Ju Zhuang Duan ( Beijing Beareau - Shi Jia Zhuang Section ). 2001/3/1 - Meikan (Meizhou, Guangdong Province - Kanshi, Fujian Province) Line is now opened for passenger service. Timetable can be found here. 2001/1/23 - German Maglev to be built at Shanghai 2001/1/8 - Although news earlier suggested "Lanjian" will operate a 55 min Guangzhou Dong-Shenzhen service, it did not happen on January 8. News today suggest "Lanjian" will not operate at a 55 min journey time until March. At the moment, "Lanjian" travels between Guangzhou Dong and Shenzhen in 60 mins on some services and 65 mins on others. No explanation was announced about the delay in speed up progress. Note Swedish X-2000 operates such routes in 55 mins. 2001/1/7 - After the release of DF11 1:87 (HO scale) model. 2-10-2 Qianjin is the next model to be offered on the market. Commercial release is expected at the end of January. Price around HKD 1600 (USD 200). 2000/12/28 - Push-pull EMU "Lanjian" (Blue arrow) has began commercial operation between Guangzhou Dong and Shenzhen. Pictures can be found here. Also, two brand new AC-DC-AC locomotives (DJ 0001, 0002) have arrived Guangshen. A news reported that GSRC has purchased the locomotives at RMB 21 million each. 2000/12/26 - Shanghai Mingzhu
(Pearl), China's first elevated railway, is put into trial operation on
today. The first phase of the 24.975-kilometre-long rail is expected to
improve the traffic flow from the south of the city to the north. The
line will bring the total length of urban transit railways in Shanghai
to 65 kilometres - the longest among China's cities. Promotional prices
range from 2 to 3 yuan and the operation times for trail run is from 08:10

This has a name of "Xian Feng Hao" (Pioneer). 2000/10/21 - A new train schedule on China Rail starting today. The improvement is emphasised on JingJiu (Beijing - Nanchang section) Line, ZheGan (Hangzhou - Changsha) Line and services to the western region (such as Sichuan province and Xinzhang autonomus region). Urumqi Bureau purchased 32 DF11s and 8 DF4Ds high performance locomotives in response to the new timetable services. A summary of train times can be found here (in Chinese). 2000/10/18 - A push-pull train set designed by Qingdao's Sifang Rolling Stock Works, namely "Shenzhou Hao (China Land)" begin servicing between Beijing and Tianjin. It was designed to capable running at a speed of 200km/h. However, due to inadequate infrastructure to support that speed on Beijing-Tianjin line. The train is restricted at a maximum of 140km/h.
